PB Travel Journal: Jodhpur

Blog_Cover_Mar18

Set amidst the endless Thar Desert is Jodhpur, which is also famously known as ‘The Blue City.’ “The houses in old Jodhpur area are all coloured in ‘Blue’, hence the name. When seen from the top of the fort, the entire city looks really beautiful and in harmony” says Amoli, our team member who vacationed in the heritage city with her friend. Along with that, what really mesmerized her was the regally inspired art and culture that still dwells in the city, attractive handicrafts and the warmth with which people receive you.

What to look out for?

The Mehrangarh Fort displays the rich heritage of the Maharajas who once lived there. There are various collectibles and antique accessories on display which were once used by the residents.

Umaid Bhavan Palace is where Maharaja Gaj Singh of Jodhpur currently resides. A part of it is inhabited by the royals while the rest of the palace is turned into a hotel. The interiors are indeed gorgeous!

Clock tower is another place frequented by visitors that is located in the middle of a day market. The tower is surrounded by local sellers of ethnic clothing, jewelry, fabrics, spices, footwear, carpets and many more household things. It’s truly a shopper’s haven!

To hang out, there is a really good place called ‘Dagley’ which means ‘Rooftop’ in Marwari and is situated in the middle of old Jodhpur near the fort area. The rooftop displays the fort in full view and a part of the city. You can just sit here and chill all day long with your friends.

Where to stay?

Find a friend who lives in Jodhpur. There is nothing better than a Marwari’s house! The hospitality, the food, the family; no hotel can match those levels.

Where to shop?

There are little markets all over Jodhpur and you can shop for juttis/mojaris, rich Rajasthani fabrics, ethnic jewelry, handcrafted bags, artifacts and all of it at a pretty reasonable rate, provided you have good bargaining skills.

Where to eat?

As I was living at my friend’s place ‘maa(aunty) ke haath ka khana’ was the best! She makes the best gatte ki sabzi and mirchi ka achaar.

Jodhpur’s street food is to die for too. You get the most amazing  Mirchi vadas, Pyaaz ki kachori, Bread pakoras and many such unhealthy yet savoury snacks; around every corner of the city. Also, I have eaten the world’s best Gulab Jamuns which are made at this local sweet shop ‘Ras Sagar’.

There are also many heritage clubs in Jodhpur which serve really good food as well. So if you have a friend who is a member there, you can enter and enjoy a nice dinner.

Local restaurants serve various cuisines and I happened to like ‘Dagley’ a lot. It is a must visit as it serves really good food.

PB Travel Journal: Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia

cover_final.jpg

An annual trip with her husband and in-laws landed our CEO, Shuchi in Dubrovnik and other parts of Croatia. It isn’t happenstance that she is a huge fan of Game of Thrones and these are the exact places where a good portion of the series was shot. She convinced them to visit Eastern Europe (particularly the Balkan region) to experience an absolutely gorgeous Fall weather with lesser crowds and fewer waiting lines because they’d have no “ygrittes” going to Croatia (This one’s only for the GoT lovers, everyone else can roll their eyes) :).

Shuchi - Travel Blog.jpg

What to look out for?

Plitvice Lakes are one of the most spectacular sights – pristine blue waters and gushing waterfalls make for picture-perfect scenery. Dubrovnik is an all-time favorite. Being a walled city, and still having about 2000 inhabitants living in the inner city, old Dubrovnik town has a charm that can put you back about 800 years in time. That, combined with modern bars, and live music emerging from small alleyways, made for a perfect combination of old and new. You will burn a good number of calories climbing stairs and the outer walled forts. Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia which are Slavic souvenirs were all once part of the great Yugoslavia, and remnants of soviet culture can still be seen in older parts of the town.

Where to stay?

In most places you can Airbnb your way through, which is perfect if you are travelling with friends/ family. Airbnb offers nice apartments with space so you can totally chill. Rixos Hotel in Dubrovnik is a fantabulous place to stay too.

Where to shop?

Ljubljana in Slovenia is a charming old city full of artists, museums and galleries. There is a nice string of shops on Mestni trg 6, Čopova Street and the Old town.

Where to eat?

Nautika in Dubrovnik is as close to a Michelin star restaurant that you can get. Insanely good food, even for vegetarians! Pizza in Ljubljana is really good and so are the falafels and bureks. Vigo Ice cream in the heart of Ljubliana is also uh-mazing!

PB Travel Journal: The Cotswolds

Travel Blog Cover

Road trips may usually refer to a bunch of friends immersing themselves in the beautiful roads of distant lands, but that’s not the case with Ashna. Our enthusiastic team member takes a yearly road trip with her parents and her destination this time was The Cotswolds. A two hour drive away from London, this place is populated with historical towns and medieval stone-built villages which were erected using the famed golden coloured Cotswold stone. Right out of a fairytale, this country side area welcomes you with its quaint creeks and picture perfect rapeseed farms.

What to look out for?

Picturesque market towns selling fresh local produce are an absolute must-go. Colossal manors and castles decorate the area making it poetic. Sudeley castle is beautiful and filled with antiquities recreating a bygone era. The area is also flocked by small chapels and pretty creeks. Cotswold is nearby Shakespeare’s birthplace, Avon so we definitely know where the greatest writer in the English language got his inspiration from. Another scenic place to visit is Arlington Row at Bibury which is considered as the prettiest village in all of England!

Where to stay?

Cheltenham town can be a good base to travel all around the Cotswold area. Oxford and Bath are two cities which are also nearby just in case you are planning to drive there. It is enriched with Georgian architecture and local Airbnb homes turn out to be pleasant homestays. They come with kitchens and you can also cook your own meal with fresh produce from cutesy kitchen gardens to your bequest 🙂

Where to shop?

As it is a rich country side area, you can always get farm fresh produce. Local honey, cheese and mouthwatering fruits seem rejuvenating buys. Daylesford is an award winning organic farm which offers a lot of things that you would want to take back home.

Where to eat?

There are a lot of tea rooms in the area but Huffkins in Cheltenham and Lucy’s in Stow-on-the-Wold top it all. Pretty flowers decorate the structure of these tea rooms and you can have an ideal English high-tea with cakes, tarts, scones & THE BEST clotted cream!

Definitely treat yourself to an authentic British Sunday Roast that consists of roasted meat with Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and gravy. Do try the Pimm’s Cup at Turf Tavern. It is the oldest pub in Oxford and has been visited by Elizabeth Taylor, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton and the list continues.

Ashna flaunts her karma bangles with her tickets indicating she had a gala time at this trip.

PB Travel Journal: Seychelles

Talk about distant travels and we are all ears. So much so that, when Nikita from our team visited Seychelles with her family, she couldn’t stop raving about it. She described it as one of the most stunning places because it’s serene, beautiful and is filled with amazing locals. Crystal clear waters, stunning food and some scenic views is how Seychelles will welcome you. We couldn’t stop taking notes on some favourites that she highly recommended.

Definitely snorkeling because it is life-changing. Swim amidst gorgeous fish and take memories back to tell stories later. Island hopping is another fun thing to do with breath-taking views of course. There’s also a plethora of bird and animal species that you would want to snap some photographs of. You will also find some cute tortoise who are loving and soothing creatures in general.

La Digue Island Lodge because it is located amongst exotic coconut and takamaka trees overlooking the serene Praslin Island. Patratan Village is another place where you can stay because it is located high above the ocean. Sea kissed breezes and beach bound hair is all you will have.

A181C54E-16BE-4967-AEA8-E10743FCCC4EWhere to shop?

Visit Sir Selweyn Clark Market in Victoria. It has some colouful stalls that will simply stun you with diverse wares. Also, Kenwyn House is another place you must visit. There are some priceless gems you can admire at and an assortment of local artwork that you will definitely want to horde.

Before that let’s praise Creole food. It’s simply delicious and you wouldn’t mind another serving. Go to Konoba for snacks or meals as they serve amazing seafood. The drinks here are vibrant looking and the view is so beautiful. Chez Marston is another place with a very welcoming host. They have an enormous spread and you can ask for recommendations from the host.
